The Digital Public History Minor
UConn’s Digital Media & Design (DMD) department uses industry-leading concepts and technologies to create future leaders in design, communications, business, entertainment, and related industries. While the History department explores the past using a variety of techniques, such as statistical analysis and oral history to shape a historical consciousness for careers in museums, universities, libraries, and related fields. The Digital Public History Minor aims to bring students from DMD and History together by serving as a laboratory for a broader transformation in both fields.
History majors will develop their skills in technology and digital media, such as web design and animation, to prepare for future roles in the workplace and to apply their research to publicly engaged work. In turn, DMD majors will gain access to historical content expertise as well as the practices and products of humanistic inquiry that ground habits of thought and creative work in richer, more culturally diverse value sets. Both groups will benefit from rich opportunities to collaborate with one another to build portable portfolio pieces and work histories through experiential learning opportunities in the classroom as well as through external internships.
